Crying is a physiological process in the life of a baby. All normal babies cry to communicate their feeling with others. Since they cannot express their feelings in words crying is the only way for them to communicate. If they are in any way uncomfortable or afraid they will simply cry. It is perfectly normal for babies to cry in situations like hunger, wet nappy, feeling too hot or cold, tight clothes, pain etc. Some babies are only reassured when someone is with them, holding them or even just in the room with them and if this is not the case will simply cry. Crying without any cause is not normal but can be habitual in some babies especially if it has the desired effect i.e. attention. Even though crying is considered as a normal way for a baby to communicate it can be worrying for family members and as the reasons for crying ranges from simple causes to serious causes it should never be ignored. It is very difficult, especially for new parents, to understand that very seldom do babies cry for nothing, there is usually a reason and it should always be investigated to find the cause.
Here are some helpful tips and remedies to guide you when dealing with your baby crying for no apparent reason. I know that this can be a very frustrating thing for parents, especially when you are tired yourself. Remember these tiny babies rely on you to give them everything they need and cannot tell you what the problem is, so it is up to you to try and find out what is wrong so that you can help them
1, Please be careful, no matter how you feel, remember it is very dangerous to shake your baby vigorously and will not help you identify the problem.
2, Tight clothes can cause irritation and once found should be removed. If the skin has been irritated by the clothes put a little baby cream on it to sooth the irritation.
3, If the room feels too hot put the fan on and open the windows making sure that your baby is not laying in a draught.
4, If the nappy is wet change it immediately, this is very uncomfortable.
5, Your baby could be suffering with colic, lift your baby gently, hold close to your body and pat your baby's back gently to allow any trapped wind to be released. This can be very painful for a baby when laid on their back.
6, If it is hunger give either breast milk or a bottle, burp your baby, then lay gently down to sleep.
7, If your baby feels cold the best thing to do is to warm your baby using your own body heat and then add a warm cover to make sure that your baby is kept warm while sleeping when laid back in its cradle.
8, Perhaps your baby is restless and just finding it difficult to sleep, rock your baby gently in your arms and walk slowly around the room.
9, Put on some gentle music to soothe your baby.
10, Try giving your baby a pacifier(dummy).
11, If no response change your baby's position, your baby could just be uncomfortable.
12, Take your baby out for a walk in the pushchair or even in the car until they sleep.
13, Rock your baby gently in their cradle.
If even after all these steps your baby carries on crying check for the following symptoms.
( Probable cause is given after every sign)
1,Press your baby's abdomen gently, baby may twist or resist you:---Colic
2,Pull your baby's ear gently, baby's crying becomes worse or baby pushes your hands away:---Earache.
3,Feel your baby's temperature with the back of your hands:--Fever due to any infection.
4,Examine the skin from head to foot:--Eruptive disease, nappy rash, measles, vesicles, allergy etc.
5,See the nose for any discharge:--Coryza.
6,Move the head gently to feel any neck stiffness:--Meningitis,head injury etc.
7,Put your ear near to your baby's chest to hear any rattling sound:--Increased mucus in wind pipes. (pneumonia, bronchiolitis, asthamatic bronchitis etc)
8,Examine the anal orifice:--Anal erosion,rectal polyp,crawling of worms.
9,Examine the genitalia:--Any discharge or erosion.
10,In male baby see the testicles which may be swollen or tender:--Orchitis,torsion of testes.
11,also notice the body movements and see for any convulsions, rigors, vomiting, cough, laboured breathing etc.
If you see the above signs or any other abnormal signs consult your doctor immediately - never hesitate - things can happen very quickly with babies and it is never worth taking a risk or feeling that it's perhaps nothing and that you are just making a fuss. It is paramount that if anything is not right that your baby gets proper treatement immediately.
