The history of feng shui began at least 3,500 years before the invention of the magnetic compass. This means that when defining authentic feng shui as using a compass it is actually misleading the student studying feng shui.
Feng Shui developed thousands of years ago in little villages of the Orient. It was then called Fold Feng Shui. The people who lived in these villages were dependent upon earths natural elements in order to survive. Therefore they studied the formations of the land and ways of the wind & water to determine the best setting for their survival.
Good Feng Shui would produce bountiful harvest, healthy livestock and abundant life. Harsh winds would destroy their crops leaving no food for their family and their animals. Violent storms tear down their homes and villages. The elements, water, rain, wind, fog, sun were believed to be the energy of heaven and earth. Apparently these shaman-kings had knowledge of landforms and weather that could drive back the elements that threatened a village.
This divinization of land forms was the beginning and foundation of Feng Shui.Landform Technique is the fundamental basis of feng shui. Compass Feng Shui originated after Landform techniques. Compass Feng Shui uses the compass and magnetic north for all of its readings.Classical Feng shui has some features similar to those found in the archaeological record, and in Chinese history and literature, but the application of classical Feng Shui is not identical to that of ancient Feng Shui techniques.Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, feng shui has been officially deemed as a "feudalistic superstitious practice" and a "social evil" according to the state's atheistic Communist ideology and discouraged or even outright banned at times. Persecution was the most severe during the Cultural Revolution, when feng shui was classified as a custom under the so-called Four Olds to be wiped out. Feng shui practitioners were beaten and abused by Red Guards and their works burned. After the death of Mao Zedong and the end of the Cultural Revolution, the official attitude became more tolerant but restrictions on feng shui practice are still in place in today's China. It is illegal in the People's Republic of China today to register feng shui consultation as a business and similarly advertising feng shui practice is banned. There have been frequent crackdowns on feng shui practitioners on the grounds of "promoting feudalistic superstitions" such as then one in Qingdao in early 2006 when the city's business and industrial administration office shut down an art gallery converted into a feng shui practice. Communist officials who had consulted feng shui were sacked and expelled from the Communist Party . Although Feng Shui originated in China it has been practiced throughout the East for a few thousand years. In other parts of the world there have also been similar ideas and the belief that the ‘spirit’ or atmosphere of a place can have an effect on how you feel is accepted in many parts of the world.
However, over the years Feng Shui has developed into a much more complex system of theory and practice that actually affects all aspects of our lives. In today's Feng Shui it is said that every single thing in your environment has a part to play in the whole and even the smallest detail can make or break those desires you have. Understanding the very subtle currents of energy that flows through our bodies and through everything in the universe, and being able to use this energy in your living and working environment, will help you reach your goals.
The key principles which have developed over the centuries encompass the concept of Yin and Yang, the male and female energies, the Five Elements, and the Eight Directions, providing a sophisticated set of principles for understanding how energy moves through the home and immediate environment to affect all areas of life.
If you apply the principles set out in Feng Shui then they can be used in an array of circumstances to help you achieve your goals and desires. Perhaps you need a job, want to know the best time to set out on a journey, help smooth relationships, find partners and more.
